Guangzhou — The Trade Capital
China's oldest international trading port and the birthplace of Cantonese cuisine. Home to the world's largest trade fair, a significant African business community, an Arab quarter, and a food culture that rivals anywhere on earth.
What Makes Guangzhou Unique
Cantonese Cuisine
Cantonese cuisine (粤菜) is considered the finest in China. Dim sum (点心), roasted meats (烧腊), fresh seafood, and the legendary yum cha (饮茶) breakfast culture. Guangzhou people live to eat.
Canton Fair
The China Import and Export Fair (April and October) is the world's largest trade exhibition. 25,000+ exhibitors, 200,000+ buyers from 220 countries. Hotels become scarce and expensive during fair periods.
Little Africa
Guangzhou's Sanyuanli and Dengfeng areas host the largest concentration of Africans in Asia — an estimated 20,000–100,000 African traders and residents. African restaurants, markets, and hair salons are concentrated here.
Arab Quarter — Xiaobei
Xiaobei Road (小北路) is Guangzhou's Arab and Middle Eastern quarter. Arabic signage, halal restaurants, hookah cafes, Islamic goods shops, and a large Arab/South Asian trading community. The most authentic Arab dining outside the Middle East in China.
Shamian Island
A beautiful colonial island in the Pearl River with preserved European architecture from the British and French concession era. Quiet, leafy, and a stark contrast to the surrounding city. Excellent for photography.
Pearl River Night Cruise
The Pearl River night cruise is Guangzhou's most popular tourist activity. The illuminated Canton Tower, Haiyin Bridge, and Guangzhou Bridge create a spectacular river panorama. Boats depart from Tianzi Pier.
Arabic & Middle Eastern Restaurants
Xiaobei Road Arabic Strip
The main strip on and around Xiaobei Road (小北路) and Huanshi West Road has dozens of Arabic restaurants, shawarma stands, Yemeni rice houses, Egyptian ful medames spots, and Lebanese grill restaurants. Walk the street and choose.
Yemeni Restaurants
Guangzhou has the largest concentration of Yemeni restaurants outside the Middle East. Lamb mandi (مندي), fahsa, saltah, and Yemeni breads. The community is centred around Xiaobei and the nearby Dengfeng area.
Hookah Cafes
Several hookah cafes on Xiaobei Road offer a full Arab social experience — shisha, Arabic coffee, mint tea, and mezze. Predominantly Arab clientele. Open late. A genuine taste of Arab social culture.
Halal Muslim Cantonese
Guangzhou also has several restaurants serving Cantonese-style cooking in a halal-certified environment — allowing Muslim visitors to experience authentic Cantonese cuisine without pork. Look for the 清真 certificate displayed at the entrance.
Indian & South Asian Restaurants
Xiaobei South Asian Cluster
The Xiaobei area that hosts the Arab community also has a significant South Asian (Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi) trading community and their restaurants. Curry, biryani, and halal grills available.
Canton Fair Period Options
During Canton Fair periods (April and October), Indian restaurants across Guangzhou expand service to accommodate thousands of Indian buyers. Pre-booking recommended. Several hotels add Indian buffet options.
Tianhe District Indian
Guangzhou's CBD Tianhe District has several quality Indian restaurants catering to the IT and business community. More upscale than Xiaobei options, with English menus and card payment.
Cantonese Food You Must Try
Dim Sum (点心)
Har gow (shrimp dumplings), siu mai, cheung fun (rice noodle rolls), egg tarts (蛋挞), turnip cake (萝卜糕). The variety in Guangzhou far exceeds anything available elsewhere. Order by pointing or ticking a paper menu.
Roasted Meats (烧腊)
Char siu (叉烧 — BBQ pork), roast goose (烧鹅), and crispy roast pork (脆皮烧肉) are Cantonese icons. Look for 烧腊 shops with meats hanging in the window. Order a mixed plate over rice (烧腊饭) for ¥30–50.
Wonton Noodles (云吞面)
Guangzhou wonton noodles are made with springy egg noodles and plump pork-shrimp wontons in a clear bone broth. A ¥15–25 bowl is one of the best value meals in China. Available from 7am at noodle shops.
Seafood (海鲜)
Guangzhou is near the coast — fresh seafood is exceptional and affordable. Huangsha seafood market (黄沙水产市场) lets you buy live seafood and have it cooked next door. Steamed fish with ginger and scallion is the Cantonese classic.
Guangzhou Practical Tips
Getting There
Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN) is one of China's busiest. Metro Line 3 connects directly to the city in 40 minutes (¥7). During Canton Fair periods, book hotels 2–3 months in advance.
Weather
Subtropical climate — hot and rainy from April to September, mild October to December, cool but rarely cold in winter. The best weather is October–December. Avoid Canton Fair weeks unless you're attending.
Language
Cantonese (粤语) is the local dialect — different from Mandarin. Most locals speak Mandarin as a second language. In Xiaobei, Arabic is spoken alongside Mandarin. English is more limited than Beijing or Shanghai.
Safety in Xiaobei
Xiaobei and Dengfeng are safe areas with a lively atmosphere. Standard precautions apply. The area is busiest in the afternoon and evening. Many restaurants and shops open late — the street is active until midnight.
